Dr. Tim Bilkey is an adult psychiatrist, and is a member of the Canadian Psychiatric Association, the American Psychiatric Association and the Canadian Society of Addiction Medicine. He has assessed over 3500 adolescents and adults for Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Dr. Bilkey recently completed a self-help book on Adult ADHD titled FAST MINDS, co-authored by Dr. Craig Surman of Harvard University. It has been published by Harvard Health Publications and Penguin Books and will be released in February 2013. FAST MINDS is now available for order. The forward has been completed by Howie Mandel, and FAST MINDS has been positively reviewed by Dr. Ned Hallowell, co-author of Driven To Distraction, Dr. Russell Barkley, author of many prestigious books on ADHD, Dr. Kathleen Nadeau, co-author of ADD Friendly Ways to Organize Your Life, and Nancy Ratey, author of The Disorganized Mind.

Dr. Bilkey is an Adjunct Mentor for the Ontario College of Family Physicians Collaborative Mental Health Project.

He has produced two medical documentaries, ADHD Across the Lifespan (re-released in 2010) and Her FAST MIND – An In Depth Look at ADHD as it Affects Women (2012). Her FAST MIND is a peer-reviewed film focussing on women with ADHD, since Dr. Bilkey has a special interest in this area. He has started one of the world’s first ADHD clinics for women.

Her FAST MIND was peer-reviewed by Dr. Mary Solanto, Associate Professor – Director, ADHD Centre, Department of Psychiatry, Mount Sinai Medical Centre, New York, who stated: "Dr. Bilkey has created a unique DVD about ADHD in women, which will be very useful for the clinician and patient alike. The DVD begins with a thorough description of the condition as it presents in women – including prevalence, heritability, typical presenting symptoms and subtype, typical comorbidities, and reasons why the disorder is under-recognized in women and girls. Particularly enlightening are the subsequent interviews with several women with ADHD, who candidly discuss their experiences with ADHD at different stages of their development, the way it has affected their educational and occupational trajectories, as well as effects on their social and family lives, emotions and self-esteem. This DVD will offer hope to women who have long suffered with similar difficulties – but didn’t know it had a name and effective treatments."

As a professional educator on the subject of ADHD, Dr. Bilkey travels the world, providing lectures to help physicians better recognize ADHD in their patients. At an individual level, he hosts preceptorships for physicians to train them about Adult ADHD.

In keeping with his mentoring role, Dr. Bilkey has developed an educational program for the rapid recognition of ADHD in adults, and this program, FAST MINDS™, has been nationally accredited by the College of Family Physicians of Canada since 2009. FAST MINDS™ has been presented to physicians across the world and has been translated into Spanish. As an international presenter, he has given lectures in Mexico, Argentina, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Taipei, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Greece. Dr. Bilkey has assessed individuals from across the world; they have come to seek his expertise in the field of ADHD from Brazil, Ireland, Barbados, Ethiopia, Africa, Hong Kong, Japan, the U.S. and throughout Canada.

Dr. Rachel Henry, Psychiatrist, Forensic Program, North Bay Regional Health Centre, has recognized Dr. Bilkey’s contribution to education with regard to Adult ADHD: “Thank you for the work you do in this field, and for your leadership in the education of professionals and the public about this disorder.”
